Welcoming New Members, Deployment Strategies Key Themes at the 2017 CommonWell Annual General Meeting and Fall Summit

For the third year in a row, MEDITECH proudly hosted the CommonWell Health Alliance Annual General Meeting and Fall Summit last week at our Joanne Wood Conference Center in Foxborough, Massachusetts. The annual Member gathering provides a valuable opportunity to gather and reflect on the many achievements the Alliance and its members have attained throughout the year. Each year, I am impressed with the level of collaboration and unity across healthcare leaders to make nationwide interoperability a reality. It’s exciting to see the Alliance’s continued growth -- in just four years, the Alliance has grown from seven founding members primarily focused on acute and ambulatory EHRs to 70+ Contributor and General Members representing more than 20 care settings. Today is one of my favorite days of the work year – the CommonWell Fall Summit and Annual Meeting. It’s a time where our 70+ CommonWell members gather together to look back on the past year, plan for the coming year and have fun catching up with each other. This year, I am pleased we will have an additional seven new members participating in the Summit, with many attending today’s New Member Welcome session. It continues to astound me how diverse and all-encompassing our membership is becoming. This group of new members is no different. National Health IT Week is a time to reflect on the impact of health IT in the U.S. – on the system and the individuals we serve. What struck me about the role of HIT this year was the poignant plight of evacuees in the face of disaster. From wildfires in Montana and California to Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria throughout our southern states and territories, adversity forced thousands of Americans out of their homes and their communities. As our Executive Director Jitin Asnaani said in our Summer Update back in June, CommonWell continues to rock and roll - both in terms of interoperability and in the news. CommonWell Health Alliance continues to grow and expand our diverse group of members. With the addition of these newest six members, CommonWell now has almost 70 members representing more than 20 settings of care. These newest members range from data sharing networks and systems integrators to identity platforms and industry associations, serving patients and caregivers across the care continuum. MEDITECH Set to Deploy CommonWell Health Alliance Services to Customers

MEDITECH Among the First Members in the Alliance to deploy the Argonaut Project’s FHIR specifications to customers MEDITECH announced it is set to offer CommonWell interoperability services in early 2018. The deployment will enable healthcare organizations to exchange patient information seamlessly for improved patient care and quality outcomes. Advancing interoperability initiatives has always been a cornerstone of MEDITECH’s healthcare IT vision. We are proud to partner with CommonWell Health Alliance in providing MEDITECH customers access to the CommonWell network, enabling faster and simpler exchange of protected health data across the care continuum. Remembering Neal Patterson

Last Thursday, a great man and health IT visionary was laid to rest. The cofounder of Cerner, Neal Patterson worked every day over the last four decades to improve the delivery of health care. One of his greatest passions was to remove the barriers to health data exchange. And as such, Neal was one of the first and biggest champions of CommonWell Health Alliance. When Farzad Mostashari, former National Coordinator for Health IT, discussed the subject in May 2012 at a Bipartisan Coalition meeting, noting that the federal government was legally constrained from implementing an official “National Patient Identifier,” he challenged the group with “you need to solve this problem yourselves.” We took that challenge seriously. Summer Update from the CommonWell Executive Director

It’s hard to believe that 2017 is already almost half over. The CommonWell team –a dogged group of volunteers with unmatched passion and determination (for interoperability of all things!) – continues to lay ever-more-pipeline to facilitate health data exchange nationwide. Mark my words: being an open, collaborative, vendor-neutral organization is not easy. How I miss the corporate days when I had my own resources and could set my own priorities, and could more or less bring everyone else for the ride whenever I was ready to share what we’ve been up to. Of course, I’ve traded off that level of nimbleness for the impact that we get through collaboration.
