“I survived HIMSS21.” That was the T-shirt I expected to find on every street corner of Las Vegas. Between the Delta variant surge alerts, the excruciating desert heat, and the discomfort (albeit appropriate and necessary) of all-day face masks, HIMSS21 was a game of wills at times. That being said, it also was one of the more high-touch, brain-stimulating conferences I have attended. The conversations were on point. The attendees were engaged. The topics were, well, topical. CommonWell was founded on the simple premise that, working together, we can break down barriers to health data exchange. As part of our industry-wide collaborative effort, we knew having health care providers’ candid input and involvement was imperative to our shared success. That’s why CommonWell formed the Provider Advisory Council (PAC) in 2016. PAC members represent a cross-section of: Health care venues: urban and community hospitals, post-acute, ambulatory, specialty Roles: CEO, CIO, CMO, nurse, physician, pharmacist, IT, operations CommonWell Service Adopters: athenahealth, Cerner, eClinicalWorks, Evident, Health Gorilla, MatrixCare and more The 12-member Council meets with CommonWell leaders on a bi-monthly basis, ensuring the voices of providers, staff and patients are captured throughout all CommonWell efforts. Adventist Health has more than 20 hospitals and 250 clinics in more than 80 communities on the West Coast and in Hawaii. With millions of patients being served per year, the need for their health IT systems to interoperate with each other—both inside and outside of the Adventist Health system – is paramount. Last month, Adventist Health shared how implementing the Cerner HIE in 2019 and connecting to the CommonWell nationwide data exchange network, including its connection to Carequality, took Adventist Health from one-way data sharing to “true interoperability.” With that one connection to CommonWell, Adventist Health clinicians immediately had the ability to access data from more 50,000 provider sites nationwide. Two weeks ago, CommonWell closed on its sixth HIMSS, celebrating 5 years since announcing our formation at HIMSS13. More than 40 of our nearly 80 member companies helped us celebrate at our Member Reception on Tuesday evening. Throughout the conference, seven of our CommonWell members participated in the Nationwide Care Transitions use case in the HIMSS Interoperability Showcase. During the live demonstrations, the participants featured CommonWell services built into their software and showed how patient data is shared across health IT systems, provider sites and geographies. This year marks our 5th Anniversary at HIMSS, which hardly seems possible for those of us who have been a part of CommonWell since day one. This year seemed to be especially fun, with individuals from many of our member companies staffing our booth. We had a great time hosting new and old friends in our booth and enjoyed highlighting the more than 9800+ provider sites committed to using CommonWell services on our life-size map wall. Twenty-six of our 60+ member companies participated at HIMSS in Orlando. Hello from sunny Orlando! Home of Disney World, the Harry Potter Experience at Universal and the HIMSS17 conference, all of which given me a twinge of awe and amazement when I walk through the gates/doors (and each of which always leave my feet hurting at the end of the day).
